Abstract

1,080,130. Vehicle suspensions. V. LANGEN. July 8, 1966 [July 10, 1965], No. 30824/66. Heading B7D. An arrangement for maintaining the trim of a vehicle constant under static loading conditions comprises connecting each of the vehicle wheels to the piston of an hydraulic cylinder, one cylinder to each wheel, the top pressure spaces in each cylinder being connected to an hydropneumatic accumulator and the cylinders of two wheels being mutually connected by a pipe, one cylinder of each connected pair being single acting and the other double acting, the interconnecting pipe being from the top pressure space of the single acting cylinder to the bottom pressure space of the double acting cylinder. As shown in Fig. 2, a front wheel 1 is connected to a single acting cylinder 3, the top space 3<SP>1</SP> of which is connected by a pipe 4 to an accumulator 5 and by a pipe 6 to the bottom space 7<SP>1</SP> of a double acting cylinder 7 to the piston-rod 24 of which is connected the rear wheel 9. The upper space 7<SP>11</SP> of cylinder 7 is connected by a pipe 10 to an accumulator 11 and the lower space is additionally connected to an accumulator 15. In each of the pipes 4, 6 and 10 is included a damping device comprising, in parallel, two oppositely orientated non-return valves R 1 and R 2 and two adjustable throttle points D 1 and D 2 . In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the top and bottom spaces 7<SP>1</SP> and 7<SP>11</SP> of the cylinder 7 are connected by a heightregulating device comprising a valve (16), actuated through a spring (23) in response to relative movements between the piston and cylinder to either admit fluid from a pressure source (20) to the upper cylinder space 7<SP>11</SP>, or to exhaust it therefrom to a reservoir (21), in a manner so as to restore the original levels. The system, with or without the damping devices, does not respond to load variations occasioned during travel. The faces of the two pistons associated with each wheel pair may be of equal area.
