Abstract

Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic compound containing at least one hydroxyl group with carbon monoxide and a nitrogenous organic compound containing at least one non-cyclic group in which a nitrogen atom is attached to a single carbon atom and via a double bond to an oxygen or nitrogen atom, in the presence of at least two metal halides, one of which is the halide of a transition metal having an atomic number of 21-29, 39-47 or 71-79 inclusive. The hydroxy compound may be a mono- or polyhydric alcohol or phenol or an ether of a polyhydric alcohol or phenol containing at least one free hydroxyl group. The nitrogenous compound may be an organic nitro, nitroso, azo or azoxy compound and may contain the hydroxyl function. Preferred transition metals are Rh, Ir, Pd and Ni. The other metal halide may be, for example, a halide of Mg, Al, Hg, Sn or Pb. The Specification refers to the preparation of linear and cross-linked polyurethanes.ALSO:Urethanes are prepared by reacting an organic compound containing at least one hydroxyl group with carbon monoxide and a nitrogenous organic compound containing at least one non-cyclic group in which a nitrogen atom is attached to a single carbon atom and via a double bond to an oxygen or nitrogen atom, in the presence of at least two metal halides, one of which is the halide of a transition metal having an atomic number of 21-29, 39-47 or 71-79 inclusive. The hydroxy compound may be a mono- or polyhydric alcohol or phenol or an ether of a polyhydric alcohol or phenol containing at least one free hydroxyl group. The nitrogenous compound may be an organic nitro, nitroso, azo or azoxy compound and may contain the hydroxyl function. Preferred transition metals are Rh, Ir, Pd and Ni. The other metal halide may be, for example, a halide of Mg, Al, Hg, Sn or Pb.
