Abstract

Styrene-butadiene rubbers and ethylenepropylene terpolymer rubbers are rendered tacky by the incorporation therein of a resin that is the reaction product of crotonaldehyde with a dihydroxy benzene and/or an alkyl phenol in which the alkyl group contains at least 4 carbon atoms. The rubber compositions may be dissolved in hydrocarbon solvents to form splicing cements. Preparation of resins.-The crotonaldehyde, together if desired with another aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, is reacted with the alkyl phenol and/or dihydroxy benzene in the presence of an acid catalyst. Exemplified phenols are p-octyl and p-dodecyl phenol and resorcinol. The phenol component may also contain other phenols, e.g. phenol.
