Abstract
An extrudable mixture comprises a crystalline polyolefin and from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a compound of a metal of Group IIIb, IVa or VIII of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleef, and a homopolymer of an unsaturated organic acid or a copolymer of an unsaturated organic acid with an unsaturated ester. In the examples, polyethylene is blended with polyacrylic acid and nickel acetate, and polypropylene is blended with (1) a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer and nickel acetate, (2) polyacrylic acid and nickel acetate, (3) a partially saponified polymethylmethacrylate and nickel acetate, (4) a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer and cobalt acetate, or (5) a partially saponified polyacrylic acid and (A) cobalt acetate, (B) aluminium sulphate or (C) titanium trichloride. The vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer is prepared by copolymerization of the monomers in aqueous emulsion in the presence of potassium persulphate, sodium bisulphite and lauryl mercaptan, and produces a copolymer with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.40. The mixtures are extruded to produce textile fibres, films, tapes and other shaped articles. The shaped articles are then dyed (see Division D1).ALSO:Dyeable shaped articles, such as textile fibres, films and tapes, are extruded from a mixture comprising a crystalline polyolefin and from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a compound of a metal of group IIIB, IVA or VIII of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleef, and a homopolymer of an unsaturated organic acid or a copolymer of an unsaturated organic acid with an unsaturated ester. In the examples, polyethylene is blended with polyacrylic acid and nickel acetate, and polypropylene is blended with 1) a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer and nickel acetate, 2) polyacrylic acid and nickel acetate, 3) a partially saponified polymethylmethacrylate and nickel acetate, 4) a vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer and cobalt acetate, or 5) a partially saponified polyacrylic acid and A) titanium trichloride, B) cobalt acetate or C) aluminium sulphate. Fibres spun from the mixture of the invention are dyed with olefin, naprolene and Mayfon class dyestuffs, and disperse dyestuffs, many of which are exemplified.
