Abstract
An extrudable composition comprises a crystalline polyolefin and from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a compound of a metal of Group IIB of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleef and a homopolymer of an unsaturated organic acid or a copolymer of an unsaturated organic acid with an unsaturated ester. Suitable polyolefins include polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene - 1, poly - 4 - methyl - pentene - 1, and polystyrene, of which isotactic polypropylene is preferred. Suitable acids are acrylic, crotonic, fumaric, mesaconic, and itaconic acids, and maleic acid or anhydride. In the examples, polypropylene is mixed with zinc compounds of polyacrylic acid, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid, or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid, or with a cadmium compound of polyacrylic acid, or with zinc oxide and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid. These mixtures, either alone or with conventional additives are melt spun into fibres and the fibres are dyed with known dyestuffs. The composition may be formed into yarns, films, fibres, tapes and other shaped articles. A modification is mentioned in which the polymeric constituents are first shaped into articles and are then treated with a metal compound until at least the surface layers of the articles have taken up from 0.1 to 10% by weight of the compound.
