Abstract
1,079,158. Wells. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 7, 1965 [July 13, 1964], No. 28864/65. Heading E1F. An underwater wellhead has a tubular guide 36 which also serves to supply fluid for controlling wellhead elements such as 28, 29 or for carrying out operations on the wellhead. A stack of blow-out preventers 26, 29 is lowered into position on the wellhead by means of a bracket 32 engaging guides 22, the stack being fixed to the casing 10 by a pressure-released connector 24. Control sleeves 44 on the bracket are connected to kill lines 42, and to conduits 94 leading fluid to operate the preventers 28, 29. The guides 36 are connected to the sleeves by joints 46, and a marine conductor 48 is connected to the stack by a pressure-operated connector 55, the guides 36 being lowered with the stack, and the conductor being subsequently lowered down the guides 36. A sleeve valve (76) (Fig. 2, not shown) in the sleeve permits fluid flow from the guides 36 to the kill lines (42), a tube (84) having a side outlet (88) and a closed lower end is arranged to engage the sleeve to prevent flow to the kill lines and direct fluid from the interior of the tube (84) to the conduits (94) to operate the preventers. The tube 84 may be replaced by a ball which may be permitted to fall and seat in the sleeve valve so that mud used to kill the well may be used to actuate the preventers. The guides 36, the conductor and the stack are supported by cables 62. The connector 55 permits emergency removal of the conductor from the well, and the joints 46 permit subsequent removal of the guides if necessary. The bracket (32) (Fig. 4, not shown) may have means (68) coacting with a bracket (66) on which a guide (36) is lowered to ensure realignment of the members (44), (46). The conductor may be dispensed with and the guides 36 may employed to guide drill pipe into the well. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) parts of the kill line and the conduits run through the base (100) so that the preventer stack may be removed and the guides (36) used to install a Christmas tree.
