An orthodontic device for straightening teeth comprises wire means for extending across a plurality of teeth, means for fastening the ends of the wire means to teeth adjacent these ends, at least one bracket means spaced along the wire means, one side of the or each bracket means being shaped to provide co-operating means for cementing the or each bracket to the outer face only of a tooth which is intermediate the teeth adjacent the ends of the wire means and the opposite side of the or each bracket means having a groove in a direction parallel to the wire means for receiving the corresponding portion of the wire means, and means for maintaining this portion of the wire means in the groove. As illustrated in Figure 5, bracket 16 is provided with a pair of holes 20 and 22 extending therethrough in the direction parallel to the groove 24 in the bracket, the wire means consists of a pair of fine parallel wires 12, and the maintaining means consists of a wire 18 reeved through the holes and having its ends secured together to form a closed loop extending around the wires 12. As illustrated in Figures 6 and 6A, the fastening means includes small diameter tubing 14 swaged over the ends of the wires 12, each end of the tubing being capable of insertion into a tube 38 forming part of a terminal bracket 34 which is to be cemented to a tooth adjacent one end of the wires 12. One side of the or each bracket means may be formed with a dovetail recess to provide the co-operating means for cementing the or each bracket to a tooth; a similar dovetail recess 36 may be formed in each of the two terminal brackets 34. The or each bracket preferably is made of porcelain, but may be made of metal or an acrylic plastics material.
