A starting igniter for fuel injection engines comprises a stem 3 with a tapered end 5 projecting beyond the end of a body part 1 and heated by a spirally wound heating element 6 flush with the end of the body part 1. The stem 3 is of reduced section adjacent the end 5 and is supported by a glass seal 7 and an electric insulator 8.
