Abstract
Light coloured and homogeneous indenecoumarone are obtained from coal tar or petro-chemical raw materials, which contain styrene, coumarone, indene and their methyl homologues, with the aid of a liquid catalyst. The polymerization is carried out at a constant monomer concentration and at a constant temperature, the temperature being adjusted within a range of \sB1 DEG C. by the flow rate of the two-phase mixture through a cooled mixer in such manner that the reaction time does not exceed 30 minutes. The catalyst is removed from the product and the product is neutralized first with solid adsorbents and secondly with a solution of dilute alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate, the resin is then separated by means of a counter-current steam distillation. Catalysts specified are sulphuric acid and a liquid complex of aluminium chloride with aromatic hydrocarbons.
