Abstract

1,078,637. Bowling lanes. BRUNSWICK CORPORATION. Feb. 23, 1966 [Feb. 23, 1965], No. 7943/66. Heading A6D. Dual purpose bowling lanes usable for conventional or carom bowling comprise an elongated carom cushion positionable alongside and above the bed of the lane, means for mounting said carom cushion for movement between a first operative position alongside and above the bed for deflecting a ball in carom bowling and a second inoperative position for permitting the ball to leave the bed in conventional bowling. The figure shows the carom cushion 44 in the first operative (or raised position) when viewed from the foul line of the bowling lane. The cushions are present on both sides of the lane and are mounted on the underside of the gutter sections 22 which when lowered about the hinge 37 form gutters for disposal of balls leaving the bed in conventional bowling. The end of the cushion consists of a metal plate 108 which is canted towards the bowler. A curtain 52, held by loops and cords is interposed between the side of the bed 12 and the underside of the gutter. The collisions of the ball 135 with the carom cushion are recorded by a tape switch 50. Means for raising and lowering the cushions comprising a reversible electric motor, winch, cables, and pulleys and associated limit switch mechanism are described in detail.
