A method of producing a gap in interengaged coil type sliding clasp fastener stringers includes pulling the stringer tapes 12, 14 apart at the desired location of the gap without separating the interengaged coils 16, 18 in order to expose the interengaged parts of the coils, and cutting the coils between the spread-apart adjacent edges of the tapes without cutting the tapes for a distance corresponding to the desired length of gap. As shown, apparatus for carrying out the method, comprises a bladeshaped punch 28 carried by a top pad 26 which is slidable over a fastener tape support 24 and the downward movement of which pulls apart the tapes. A vertically movable cutting anvil 30, loaded by a relatively strong spring (50) Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) supports the coils 16, 18 to be cut, and a scrap pad 32 is loaded by relatively light springs (36) for limited vertical movement within the anvil 30. In operation downward movement of the punch 28 against the springs 36 from the position shown depresses and severs the lower sides of the coils 16, 18; continued movement of the punch moves the anvil 30 and pad 32 downwardly in unison so that they grip and push the severed coils away from stitches 20, 22 on the tapes 12, 14. Subsequent return movement of the punch 28 and pad 32 raises the severed coils to the initial position of the anvil where they are displaced by longitudinal movement of the stringers as the latter are moved to the next gap location.
