Abstract

1315911 Moulding sliding clasp fasteners TEXTRON Inc 3 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 12706/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division E2] A method of manufacturing a slide fastener whereby top end stops are formed comprises the steps of passing each stringer tape 12, Fig. 7, through a slot 93, 93<SP>1</SP> in a block 78 until the end portion of the tape without elements 20 lies adjacent cavities 122, 122<SP>1</SP> whereupon pieces of stock fusible material 92, 92<SP>1</SP> are passed through bores 91, 91<SP>1</SP> until they abut wall 96. Fusing member 124 is lowered and pushes the block 78 against springs 110 so that the pieces of stock 92 are severed near their ends and are contained within cavities 122 by the legs 102, 104 of anvil 100 fixed in base 106. Ultrasonic energy is supplied to member 124 and this is transmitted via legs 130, 130<SP>1</SP> to the pieces of stock 92 so that they fuse to the shape of the cavities 122 and on to the tape ends to form the end stops 24, 26. Fusing member 129 is then retracted. Prior to this action the end elements 38-44, Fig. 2, may be deformed and reduced in size so as to accommodate the slider "diamond" 36 when in its uppermost position in order to prevent unsightly splaying of the tape ends. This is achieved by threading the tape ends into slots 50, Fig. 5, of block 46 and deforming the end elements 38-44 by means of an ultrasonic horn 64 having two sets of cavities, e.g. 74, 75 being pressed against the block 46.
