Abstract
1,078,350. Knitting. SINGER CO. March 16, 1966 [March 18, 1965] No. 11628/66 Heading D1C. A machine for knitting a border on to the edge of a piece of fabric or for knitting two pieces of fabric together at their edges, comprises two rows of reciprocable hook needles 22 having sliding tongues 26 also reciprocable in timed relationship with the needles to close the hooks of the needles after they have penetrated the fabric by passing through it and through apertures 82 in a plate 81 supported by a work surface 71 of a frame 70 to receive yarn from a series of yarn guide tubes 60. The needles of each row are offset with respect to the needles of the other and after they have received their yarns by the action of the guide tube 60 wrapping yarn around their hooks they are withdrawn and draw loops through the fabric. The support 70 is oscillated in timed relation with the needle movement to shog the plate 81 and guide tubes 60 sideways one needle space in opposite directions in successive courses so that in successive needle movements the needles receive yarn alternately from adjacent guide tubes. A warp knitted border or strip is therefore knitted through the piece of fabric fed to the machine. A feed block 204 having serrations 205 is continuously reciprocated in timed relation with the needle movement and serves to advance the fabric after each course of knitting by the needles. A presser foot 41, Fig. 2, serves to hold the fabric down on the work surface. The various movements of the components are derived from a main drive shaft 12, Fig. 1, on which are mounted a pair of eccentrics 14 and 34 from which is derived the motion of the needles and their tongues. These movements are transmitted from the eccentrics through pitmans 15, 33 coupled respectively to horizontal bars 16, 31 clamped to vertical rods 18, 30, Figs. 1 and 2, having secured at their lower ends blocks 19, 29 to which are secured the needle and tongue mountings. The frame 70 is oscillated by a linkwork 102 coupled to it which derives its movement from a cam 95 driven through gearing 87, 89, 90 and a shaft 85 from the horizontal shaft 12, Fig. 1, to impart the transverse movement to the apertured plate 81. In addition the guide tubes 60 are mounted in a block 140 secured to a carrier 150 which has a transverse reciprocatory movement imparted to it as well as a slight oscillatory motion about an horizontal axis extending in the transverse direction. These movements are imparted from eccentrics mounted on a shaft 91 Fig. 1 which through connections 163 .... 168 secured to the carrier 150, Fig. 5, reciprocate the carrier. The carrier is also mounted on trunnion pins 116, 117 about which it is oscillated by rock arm 132 and a link 133 coupled to the eccentrics on the shaft 91 to impart the oscillatory motion. The composite movement of the carrier 150 causes the yarn tubes 60 to wrap the yarns around the needles. The feed block 204 is mounted in a channel 200 secured to a feed frame 182 which derives a composite translatory motion from a pair of eccentrics oscillating shafts 180, 181 Fig. 12, having arms 183, 186 secured to the frame 182. The movement of the block 204 serves to advance the fabric and stitches after each course of knitting by the needles.
