Abstract

The position of, for example, a crane is controlled by scanning marks photo-electrically, inductively or capacitatively as the crane passes them to produce an impulse which is fed to a counter 11 (Fig. 1) and also to an auxiliary counter 15 to which is applied between two impulses a predetermined number of auxiliary pulses, an alarm signal being given if the correct number of pulses has not been attained when the impulse arrives. In the form shown two further error detecting devices are described, (1) a comparison circuit 20 which checks that all the pulses of the input 10 have been counted and whether the reading of the counter 11 has changed without an input pulse appearing, and (2) a code tester 24 which gives an alarm signal if the outputs of the counter 11, which is preferably an annular closed shift register, do not agree with the code used.
