Abstract
1,077,878. Detecting threshold level. SOCIETE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTROMECANIQUES JEUMONT - SCHNEIDER. Feb. 19, 1965 [Feb. 25, 1964], No. 7307/65. Heading H3T. To determine if a variable D.C. voltage is above or below a given threshold value it is applied to a bi-stable circuit in conjunction with a pulsating voltage which goes outside the two levels at which the bi-stable circuit changes over; the output of the bi-stable circuit is passed to a further bi-stable circuit via a delay circuit of time-constant longer than one cycle of the pulsating voltage, so that the second bi-stable circuit changes over at a definite value of the variable voltage. If this definite value is to be the upper threshold of the first bi-stable circuit, the variable and pulsating voltages are applied via an AND circuit which passes on whichever instantaneous value is the lower. For use with the lower threshold an OR gate is used to pass on whichever instantaneous value is the higher. The time constant of the coupling circuit should be asymmetric, having a greater value for falling or rising voltages respectively, in these two modifications. Such asymmetry can be provided in the former case by the conduction or non-conduction of the output transistor of the first bi-stable circuit, and in the latter case by a parallel diode/resistor circuit in series with the lead from the first bi-stable circuit to the shunt capacitor that provides the delay. More than one input voltage can be present simultaneously. The bistable circuits are preferably transistor Schmitt trigger circuits. If necessary, the D.C. level of the input signal is shifted to bring it in the proper relationship to the threshold levels of the first bi-stable circuit.
