Abstract
Mixtures of close boiling-point hydrocarbons having different carbon/hydrogen ratios are separated by an extractive distillation process in which the solvent is 2-methyl glutaronitrile, the hydrocarbons of lower C/H ratio being removed in the vapour phase, and those of higher C/H ratio being subsequently recovered from admixture with the solvent by a separate distillation, from which the solvent may be recycled. Extensive lists are given of possible separations which may be carried out, but the examples refer to the separation of cyclohexane from benzene, and n-octane from octene-1.
