Abstract
Films used for wrapping foodstuffs are made from compositions comprising isomaltol (i.e. 2-hydroxy-3-acetyl furan) and polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidine chloride, together with conventional plasticizers and stabilizers.ALSO:Foodstuffs are preserved by contacting with a small quantity of isomaltol (i.e. 2-hydroxy-3-acetyl furan) or a non-toxic salt thereof. The preservative may be mixed with the foodstuff, or as an aqueous solution may be used as a dip for or sprayed on to the foodstuff, or included in a packaging material in which case the foodstuff is protected by the vapour of the preservative. Such packaging materials include paper which has been soaked in an aqueous solution of isomaltol and films of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene compositions in which isomaltol has been incorporated during manufacture. The preservation of strawberries, shredded coconut, chocolate cake (isomaltol being added to the batter before baking), oranges, asparagus, prune juice, raspberries, and a meat containing dog food is exemplified. The preservation of bread by wrapping in isomaltol-containing plastics films is also mentioned.
