Abstract
A gas, a lipid, an alcohol or a hydrocarbon is separated from a medium containing it by osmosis through a membrane which is impermeable to the medium but permeable to said substance contained in the medium, the membrane being of a material impermeable to said substance and having incorporated therein, in the form of discrete particles, an additive permeable to said substance, but not soluble therein, and preferably which swells or gels in its presence. The membrane may contain 2-25% of additive and may contain a plurality of additives of different particle form or dimensions. The membrane may also contain a wetting agent for the additive which is soluble in the substance to be separated and/or miscible with it. The membrane may be in the form of a sheet, slab, sheath, bag or tube and may be formed by e.g. extrusion, injection moulding, calendering or centrifuging. The membrane may also be formed from a mixture containing a film-forming material that is initially permeable to the osmosable substance and can be rendered impermeable thereto by subsequent treatment. The permeable particles of additive are distributed randomly, without pore formation, throughout the impermeable film-forming substance forming the membrane. A specific material may, depending on what is being separated, act both as a film-former and as additive. In Examples membranes permeable to one or more of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide comprise (1) polyvinylidene chloride (film-former) and polyethylene (additive); (2) polyvinyl alcohol (film-former) and methyl cellulose (additive); (3) polyvinyl butyral (film-former) and cellulose acetate (additive); (5) polyamide (film-former) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (additive). membranes permeable to lipids comprise (film-former given first) (6) polyvinyl chloride and smectic clay; (7) polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene; (8) polyamide and ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose; (9) polyvinyl acetal and ethyl cellulose. Membranes permeable to alcohols comprise (11) polyvinyl chloride and ethyl and methyl cellulose (additives); (12) polyvinyl alcohol and ethyl cellulose; (13) chloroprene rubber and smectic clay. Membranes permeable to hydrocarbons comprise (14) polyvinyl alcohol and smectic clay; (15) polyvinylidene chloride and chloroprene rubber; (16) polyvinyl butyral and dammar gum; (17) polyvinyl acetate and smectic clay; (18) polyvinyl aceto-chloride and smectic clay; (19) polyvinyl carbazole and ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose. Plasticizers and wetting agents such as triacetin octyl adipate, tricresyl phosphate, butyl phthalate, sorbitol and glycerin may be incorporated into the membrane compositions.
