Abstract

The invention comprises xanthic acid esters of the general formula R1S-C-O-C2H4-SR2 in which R1 is an alkyl radical containing up to 4 carbon atoms or an alkyl mercaptoalkyl or aralkyl hydrocarbon radical and R2 is an alkyl radical. They may be prepared by reacting a mercapto-ethanol of the general formula R2SC2H4OH with carbon disulphide and an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of water or of an inert organic solvent to give the corresponding xanthode which is then alkylated with an appropriate alkylating agent, e.g. an alkyl halide or dialkyl sulphate. Examples are given of the preparation of S - methyl - b - methylmercapto - xanthate, S - methyl - b - n - butylmercapto - xanthate, S - ethyl - b - methylmercapto - xanthate, S - 2 - methylmercaptoethyl - b - methylmercapto xanthate; and S-benzylb -methylmercapto-xanthate.ALSO:Xanthic acid esters of the general formula <FORM:1077227/A5-A6/1> , in which R1 is an alkyl radical containing up to 4 carbon atoms, an alkylmercapto alkyl radical or an aralkyl hydrocarbon radical and R2 is an alkyl radical are used as the active agents in pesticidal compositions. The xanthic acid esters may be mixed with solid or liquid diluents or carriers which preferably contain wetting or dispersing agents.
