Abstract

Multigrade gear oils comprise a mixture of (a) de-waxed paraffin based oils having a viscosity below 5 c.S. at 100 DEG C., a VI above 90 and a solidification point below - 15 DEG C. with (b) naphthene based oils having a viscosity above 8.5 c.S. at 100 DEG C., a VI above 60 and a solidification point below - 20 DEG C.; the ratio of (a) : (b) being 1 : 5 to 1 : 1 and (c) one or more viscosity index improving agents, e.g. polyacrylic esters. The composition may also contain up to 20% of synthetic oils having a viscosity of 3-9 c.S. at 100 DEG C. and a VI above 130, e.g. esters such as those obtained from diols and straight or branched chain monocarboxylic acids, and polyolefins such as polyethylene.
