Abstract

Aqueous solutions containing heavy metal salts are purified using a water-immiscible organic solvent and an organic acid which forms a derivative soluble in the water immiscible phase. The organic acid, which may be substantially insoluble in water, may be an aromatic or aliphatic carboxylic, phosphoric or sulphonic acid, preferably containing 8 or more C atoms in the molecule. Specified acids include naphthenic acid, 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, and tertiary carboxylic acids having 9-11 C atoms in the main chain. Specified solutions purified include solutions of hydrogen peroxide and those containing the sodium salt of anthraquinone disulphonic acid used in the manufacture thereof by successive reduction and oxidation. Specified heavy metal impurities include the ions Fe, Cu and Mn. The organic acid may be regenerated by treating the water-immiscible phase with an aqueous solution an acid of such as sulphuric, phosphoric or hydrochloric acid.
