1,077,033. Pump elements for blood exchange apparatuses. MEDIZINTECHNIK LEIPZIG VEB. Jan. 18, 1966, No. 2284/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2] A pump element for blood exchange apparatuses comprises a piston and a cylinder, the piston being provided with a peripheral groove and inlet and outlet bores which extend from the end-face remote from the cylinder head to communicate with the peripheral groove whereby a liquid sealing medium can be circulated in the groove. A system of two or more such pump elements may be incorporated in a blood exchange apparatus. As shown, piston 5 of pump element 1 is provided with peripheral groove 2 and bores 4. A liquid sealing medium 9, e.g. blood plasma, is pumped from reservoir 10 through groove 2 into waste container 11. In a modification (not shown), the liquid sealing medium may be circulated in a closed loop from the groove of a last pump element to the groove of a first pump element. In order to ensure an adequate amount of sealing medium in each groove, an extension 6 is provided on the outlet bore. The liquid sealing medium is passed from reservoir to grooves and finally to waste container via conduits 8 which are connected to bores 4 by connectors 7. Blood is pumped from chamber 12, and the function of the liquid sealing medium is to prevent air from entering the blood.,
