[Also in Divisions D1 and G1] The circuit connections of an electrical appliance can be switched to adapt it for operation on a relatively high or a relatively low voltage, and a voltage indicator is provided which indicates whether or not the switch setting is correct for the applied voltage. In Fig. 1 a domestic iron 9 has heating elements 7, 8 which may be connected either in series or in parallel by a switch K to the supply 1, 2. A neon or other discharge lamp 6 is connected with resistors across the supply so that it lights only on a high voltage supply. Alternatively the neon lamp may be connected across one heating element only (Fig. 2 not shown). The switch K is set to high voltage and the iron connected up. If the supply is high voltage the lamp lights; if the lamp does not light the voltage is low and the switch must be altered, when the lamp will light. Two lamps may be used, both connected through resistors across one of the heating elements and so arranged that if the switch setting is correct, so that the correct voltage appears across each element, one lamp lights and the other does not. With this arrangement both lamps light if the appliance is switched to low voltage but connected to a high voltage source, and neither lamp lights if the appliance is switched to high voltage but connected to low voltage. The lamp which is on may serve as a pilot light in a thermostatically controlled iron. In another arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), one heating element X is always in circuit and has two lamps across it and the other element Y is connected in series with the first for high voltage operation, and again one lamp lights when the setting is correct. One element may be always across the supply and a second element connected in parallel with it for low voltage operation only. A travel iron (Figs. 5a, 5b and 5c, not shown) has the switch (K) mounted within the handle (22) at its rear, and the handle pivots about a horizontal axis (31). The member (24) fixed on the base is arranged so that when the handle is lowered for transport the switch lever (23) is moved to the high voltage position. The lamps are behind a translucent cover (30).
