1,076,691. Measuring surface roughness electrically; photo-electric thickness measuring. WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. and J. G. GOFFEY. Jan.13, 1964 [Oct. 23, 1962], No.40147/62. Headings G1A, G1M and G1N] In a device for testing surface roughness of a paper web 12 moving over a drum 11, two rollers 15, 16 spaced in the direction of travel of the web, are biased on to the drum 11 and are carried on respective arms 18, 19 pivoted at 23, 24 and carrying between their upper ends a microswitch 32 sensitive to relative movement of the two arms. Thus the switch is not affected by overall changes in web thickness as both arms then move together; but, if a local variation in thickness affects one roller only, the switch closes and operates a marking device. The microswitch may be replaced by a differential transformer or a capacitor transducer. Alternatively a light source may be placed on one arm and a photo-electric cell on the other, so that movement of the one arm alters the amount of light passing through a fixed screen to the cell. The rollers may be applied to a web portion not actually on the roller, and several of these surface testing devices may be mounted side by side across the width of the web.
