Abstract

In a method of dyeing and finishing material, particularly knitted fabrics, the material is conveyed through the treatment zone by means of endless flexible tenter bands which together with the material pass over at least one roller in the treatment zone. The edges of the material are impaled on the pins of the tenter bands, the bands are then turned so that the pins project outwardly, and the bands and material are in substantially the same plane. The bands with the material pass first through a scouring device comprising two rollers (19) and (20) having rollers or brushes spaced around their circumferences to achieve a beating action, Fig. 1A (not shown). The liquid in the scouring device may be water or a spirit solvent. The excess liquid is removed and the material is conveyed round a perforated rotating drying drum (22), through which hot air circulates. The material may then be heat set in a blanket calendering device (27) followed by immersion in a dye bath (31). Excess dye liquid is removed prior to passage of the material through a steam treatment chamber (33). The material is subsequently washed by means of a spray pipe (35), the excess liquid being squeezed of by rollers (36), dried by passage over a perforated rotating drum (37) and cooled by means of a fan (40). The material may then be rolled or folded, the tenter bands returning to the feed end of the apparatus. The tenter bands, one at each side of the fabric, may diverge subsequent to the attachment of the material to further tension the material.
