107,608. Noyes, M. E. May 4, 1916. Gear-wheels, grinding and trueing teeth of.-In a gear-grinding machine, the shaft 22, Figs. 1 and 7, carrying the gear blank 23, is mounted in a frame 2 having an extended reciprocating motion transversely of the shaft 22, whereby the blank 23 is brought towards and away from the grinding- wheel 12, which works in a stationary plane, the movement of the blank when in contact with the grinding-wheel being controlled by a templet 28 having the same size and contour as the finished gear tooth, the blank being indexed when out of contact with the grinding-wheel. Figs. 3 and 7 are respectively sectional views on the lines y-y and A-A, Fig. 1. The grinding-wheel 12 is carried by a shaft 11 provided with a belt pulley 14 and carried in bearings 38, Fig. 1, adjustable longitudinally in a block 39. The block 39 is angularly adjustable on a base-piece 5 which is positioned vertically by a screw 7 and nut 8. The work-holding shaft 22 has a double clutch 27, 36, Fig. 7, splined thereon, and is alternately clutched to an indexing-gear 25 and to the templet-carrier 32. The templet 28 is slidably mounted on an arm 31 on the carrier 32 and engages a finder 29 bolted to the framework. The machine is operated by a pulley 46, Fig. 3, connected by a handcontrolled clutch 48 to a gear-wheel 49 meshing with gear-wheels 50, 60 which respectively drive the indexing-mechanism and the frame-reciprocating mechanism. The frame 2 is reciprocated by a rack thereon engaged by a gear-wheel 98 driven by a gear-wheel 96 on a shaft 95 carrying a bevelwheel 94. The wheel 94 is driven in alternate directions by bevel-wheels 92, 93 provided with clutch members 90<a>, 91 alternately engaged by a clutch member 58 splined on the shaft 59 carrying the gear-wheel 60. The clutch member 58 is moved, to reverse the direction of motion of the frame 2, by an arm 57 on a shaft 56 rocked by reversing-mechanism controlled by a lever 61, Fig. 1, actuated by stops 62, 63 on the frame 2. The movement of the lever 61 rocks a shaft 66, Figs. 3 and 6, connected to a slide 68 on a shaft 69 which is supported in fixed brackets 70, 71, and is attached by a link 72 to a rock-arm 73 on the shaft 56. Blocks 74, 75 are pinned on the shaft 69 and are alternately latched by pawls 78, 79 on the brackets 70, 71, springs 76, 77 being interposed between the slide 68 and the blocks 74, 75. The movement of the slide 68 compresses one of the springs 76, 77 until the pawl 78 or 79 is released by a trip 81 or 82 on the arm 67, when the spring moves the shaft 69 longitudinally and thus rocks the shaft 56. The frame 2 may be set by hand through a hand-wheel 110 on a shaft 104 carrying a gear-wheel 109 meshing with the gear-wheel 96, the clutch 101 by which the gear-wheel 96 is connected to its shaft 95 being first released by a rod 105. The gear-wheel 50 driving the indexing- mechanism is provided with a tubular hub 51 carrying a clutch member 52 adapted to be engaged by a clutch member 54 splined on the main operating-shaft 53. The clutch 54 is operated by an arm 55 attached to the shaft 56 through a pawl 84 and a rock-arm 83. The shaft 53 is thus rotated when the shaft 56 is rocked at the end of the movement of the frame 2 away from the grinding-wheel, the distance between the clutch faces being such that the clutch 54, 52 is engaged before the clutch 58, 90<a>. The pawl 84 is tripped by a lug 89 on a disk 80 carried by the clutch member 54 when the shaft 53 has made one revolution. The shaft 53 is provided with a gear-wheel 113 engaging a smaller gear-wheel 112 which is mounted on a sleeve on a shaft 111. The sleeve is provided with one member 114 of a friction clutch, the other member 115 of which is held from rotation by a lever 116, Fig. 7, engaging a notch therein, the lever being tripped when the shaft 53 starts to rotate, to allow the shaft 111 to make one revolution for each revolution of the shaft 53. The shaft 111 carries a spur-wheel 123 which, through an idler, engages a spur-wheel 126 splined on the shaft 23<a> driving the indexing-gear 25. The spur-wheel 126 has the same number of teeth as the blank to be operated upon, and, in order that gear blanks of various size may be operated upon, the wheel 126 is interchangeable, the idler wheel being adjustably mounted to engage therewith. The clutch 27, 36 by which the indexing- gear and the templet carrier 32 are alternately connected to the work shaft 22, is operated by a lever 127, the lower forked ends 129, 130 of which are engaged by a cam disk 131 splined on the shaft 53 and disposed between brackets 132, 133 attached to the frame 2.
