Abstract
1,076,072. Signal level detector. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. March 11, 1966 [March 12, 1965], No. 10619/65. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] A signal level detector comprises means for producing from an alternating input signal a unidirectional cyclically varying signal having maximum and minimum values proportional to the peak value of the alternating input signal, and a switching device to which the unidirectional signal is applied, which device assumes one state upon the maximum value exceeding a first threshold and a second state upon the minimum value falling below a second threshold. The unidirectional signal is formed by the combination of a full-wave rectified version of the input signal, provided by diodes 8, 9 and a similar signal of 90 degrees phase difference obtained from phase-shift circuit 10-13 and full-wave rectifier 14, 15. The signal is then applied to Schmitt trigger 17, which circuit has unequal collector load resistors 20, 21, so that transistor 18 is switchedoff when the maximum of the unidirectional signal exceeds a first threshold, and is not turned on until the minimum falls below a second, lower threshold. The diodes 8, 9, 14, 15 may be replaced by transistors connected in emitter-follower configuration (Fig. 3, not shown). A polyphase input signal may be employed, in which case the phase-shift network is dispensed with, since the rectified input will have the cyclic form necessary.
