Abstract

853,960. Automatic phase control systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 21, 1957 [Feb. 24, 1956], No. 5747/56. Class 40(5). In an automatic phase control circuit, e.g. for a colour television receiver, comprising an oscillator, a discriminator for comparing the phase of the oscillations generated by the oscillator with the phase of control oscillations so as to generate a control voltage dependent on the phase difference between the generated oscillations and the control oscillations, the control voltage being fed via a smoothing filter to the oscillator so as to maintain the generated oscillations in a predetermined phase relationship with the control oscillations, the filter comprises a series resistance and shunt capacitance and is provided with at least one additional element having a non-linear response to the control voltage so that when the control voltage is of small amplitude the bandwidth of filter is small, and when the control voltage is of larger amplitude the bandwidth of the filter is increased to allow a more rapid control of the generated oscillations. In one embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the series resistor of the filter is shunted by a non-linear resistor, and in a further embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown) the series resistor is shunted by two diodes, which are connected in parallel but in opposite directions. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5, the filter consists of the series resistor 7, and the shunt capacitor 8 which is in series with a resistor 9. A pair of diodes 13, 14, are connected in series with the resistor 9 and biased to be normally conducting, the arrangement being such that when the voltage across the resistor 7 exceeds a predetermined positive or negative valve one or other of the diodes is rendered non-conductive so that the shunt circuit of the filter is disconnected from earth whereby the bandwidth of the filter is increased. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification. 636,575.
