Abstract

Aluminium fluoride is prepared by heating fluosilicic acid solution to 45-75 DEG C., rapidly adding solid Al(OH)3 so that the temperature of the resulting suspension rises to at least 97 DEG C., maintaining that temperature for 5-15 minutes, rapidly filtering off the precipitated SiO2 and crystallizing out the resulting AlF3. 3H2O from the filtrate at 80-100 DEG C. within 3-6 hours while stirring. The fluosilic acid solution may have a concentration of 15-25% by weight. The Al(OH)3 is used in an amount less than stoichiometric by up to 5%, and is preferably added to the fluosilicic acid within one minute with stirring.
