Abstract
A process for the manufacture of carbon black having improved ageing properties and resistant to burning during manufacture comprises the steps of introducing a fluid hydrocarbon into a hot reaction zone for thermal decomposition to form carbon black and a gaseous effluent, quenching the hot mixture with water, separating the carbon black from the gaseous effluent and pelletizing the carbon black, and a characterizing step of introducing into the process an inorganic, water-soluble, non-volatile phosphorus compound, e.g. H3PO4, NH4H2PO4 in an amount sufficient to provide in the carbon black an equivalent amount of elemental phosphorus equal to at least 0.1% by weight of carbon black. The process includes a treatment of the black under oxidizing conditions, e.g. heating with HNO3, O3, O2, NO2 etc. to form an oxidized carbon black product. The phosphorus compound may be introduced into the reaction zone portion of the process or in the quenching or pelletizing water or bath.
