Abstract
The invention comprises a 3,11-diketo-4,9-diene-17-substituted-19-nor steroid of the general formula <FORM:1074494/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms; R1 is hydrogen or an acyl radical derived from an organic acid having from 1-18 carbon atoms; and R2 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon chain having 1-4 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 11b -hydroxy compound with an oxidizing agent, e.g. chromic anhydride. The 11b -hydroxy-19-nor starting compound may be obtained by reacting the corresponding 3-keto-5(10),9(11)-diene-17-substituted - 19 - nor - steroid in alkaline medium with oxygen so as to form the corresponding 3 - keto - 4,9 - diene - 11b - hydroperoxy - 17 -substituted-19-nor steroid which is reacted with a reducing agent so as to form the desired 3-keto 4,9 - diene - 11b - hydroxy - 17 - substituted-19-nor steroid. As reducing agent there may be used a trialkyl phosphite or an alkali metal iodide. Pharmaceutical compositions having an anti-cholesterol and anabolizing action and containing the above compounds are administered orally, perlingually, transcutaneously or rectally.
