1,074,352. Measuring thermal deformation; testing concrete. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 14, 1966 [March 19, 1965], No. 11105/66. Headings G1N and G1S. The mechanical properties of a slab of concrete subjected to a thermal gradient are determined by supporting the slab between a pair of fixed supports, heating one surface of the slab and cooling the opposite surface, sensing the resulting deformation of the slab and controlling a hydraulic jack in accordance with the sensed value to compensate for the sag. In the Figure (not shown) slab (5), supported at (3), (4), is heated electrically by plates (11) on its upper surface, surrounded by thermal insulation (12) to render the heating uniform. The lower surface is associated with a duct through which air is passed. A table (14) is rigidly supported beneath the slab and carries a plurality of sensing elements (19), (29), the former controlling actuation of hydraulic jacks (20), (21) supported by a beam (22) above the slab. Elements (29) sense local deformations of the slab. The temperature at various points on the slab is detected by thermocouples.
