Abstract
1,074,325. Brake controlling by inertiamearis. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 24, 1964 [Oct. 16, 1963], No. 40893/63. Heading F2F. A vehicle wheel assembly incorporating means to automatically reduce the fluid pressure controlling the braking action when the wheel skids or approaches skidding conditions comprises an axle 1 carrying the wheel hub 4, a sensing device comprising a flywheel 31 driven from the wheel through a clutch 36 which slips on rapid deceleration of the wheel to allow cam means 38, 39, 40 to actuate an operating member 25 controlling a switch or, as shown, a valve 27 controlling the relieving of braking pressure, the switch or valve being arranged at one end of a passage 10 in the axle through which the switch or valve is connected with the means controlling the relieving of pressure in the brakes. The cam means comprises balls 38 engaging ramps 39 on a cam plate 40 connected to the housing 16 by a pin 41 a pin 43 on member 35 or 40 engaging an arcuate notch in the other. In a compressed-air braking system the valve 27 acts as a pilot valve controlling a main valve. In a servo operated hydraulic system opening the valve permits air entering the housing 16 through aperture 46 to pass to the servo-device. When member 25 operates a switch the latter is connected to a solenoid valve by conductors passing through the passage 10 and connected to a solenoid valve. The housing 16 may be of porous material to permit atmospheric air to reach the passage 10 when the valve 27 is opened. The device may be used in conjunction with the servo-device described in Specifiation 962,933. The valve unit controlled by the servo-device may control the brakes on all the wheels of a vehicle or only on one or more of the wheels of non rotating axles. In the case of rear wheel driven cars a sensing unit driven from the transmission may be provided to control the brakes on the rear axle. The manner in which the device of the invention may be applied to a beam axle is also described.
