Abstract
1502109 Vacuum servomotors BENDIX CORP 28 May 1975 [20 June 1974 (2) 1 July 1974] 23244/75 Heading F2F [Alsoin Division G3] A power servomotor comprises power portion 12 operated by pedal 20 to cause closure of communication between chambers 30 and 32 by surface 68 engaging seat 78 and opening of communication between atmosphere and chamber32 by cylindrical section 82 moving away from surface 68, resulting in leftward movement of piston assembly 114 to generate an hydraulic pressure in a large diameter first pressurizing chamber 134 which communicates with a second pressurizing chamber 146 via passage 152 and valve 156, chamber 146 being connected to rear brakes 16. At "vacuum runout" when chamber 32 is filled with air at atmospheric pressure valve 156 is closed and a valve 188, controlling communication between first chamber 134 and a relief chamber 136 connected to reservoir 144, is opened to reduce pressure in chamber 134 so that the area effective to generate pressure in chamber 146 is reduced from the area of chamber 134 to that of chamber 146 to provide an increased brake pressure for a given input force on pedal 20. In a second embodiment the plunger 66 coupling pedal 20 with the actuator of valve 188 incorporates radial spring levers to convey "feel" of the brake pressure to the operator in the form of a reaction force on pedal 20. In other embodiments the plunger 66 may be rigidly coupled to the actuator of valve 188 and passages 138 and 141, communicating reservoir 144 with chambers 134 and 136 respectively, may house a ball valve and a ball tilt valve respectively, so that the connection between relief chamber 136 and reservoir 144 is closed when piston assembly 114 has travelled a certain distance, so insuring against a sudden drop in brake pressure in the event of vacuum failure.
