Abstract

Compositions comprise a copolymer of ethylene and 2 to 25 weight per cent of an ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid having 3 to 8 carbon atoms or an anhydride or partial ester of such acid wherein the acid moiety has at least one carboxyl group and the alcohol moiety contains 1 to 20 carbon atoms, said copolymer having interspersed therein finely divided metal particles. The copolymers may be derived by random or graft copolymerization of acidic monomers such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, fumaric, maleic or itaconic acid, or polycarboxylic anhydrides or partial esters such as maleic anhydride or monomethyl or monoethyl maleates or fumarates. Specified metals are aluminium, lead and iron. Minor proportions of non-metallic fillers, e.g. carbon black, may also be present and the compositions may be moulded to form cups, electromagnet cores, machine parts and housings. Examples describe compositions of ethylene/ acrylic acid graft copolymers with (1-4 and 9 aluminium, (5) lead, (6) iron, (7) aluminium and carbon and (11) aluminium and chopped glass fibre stands; and of ethylene/acrylic acid random copolymers with (8 and 10) aluminium.
