Abstract

Polytetramethylene glycol having a number average molecular weight of 1000 to 6000 and an inherent viscosity in a phenol/tetrachloroethane mixture lying on or below the upper straight line drawn on a graph of the log of the inherent viscosity against the log of the molecular weight shown in Fig. 1, is prepared by passing tetrahydrofuran and a catalyst through sufficient to produce the poly(tetramethylene glycol), mixing the reaction solution with a polymerization terminator, and separating out the polytetramethylene glycol. The reactants <PICT:1073230/C3/1> are preferably in a reaction zone having a length to diameter ratio of at least 50 for 2 to 60 minutes. Suitable catalysts are fluorosulphonic acid, chlorosulphonic acid, pyrosulphuric acid, FeCl3, AlCl3 and SnCl4. In an example, the catalyst used in fluorosulphonic acid, the polymerization is ended by steam, any esterified end groups are hydrolysed by hot water or steam, unreacted tetrahydrofuran is removed by steam stripping, preferably in the presence of an anti-oxidant, and the polyether produced neutralized with calcium hydroxide. The polytetramethylene glycols produced by process have a low deviation of molecular weight and may be used to prepare elastomeric polyester, e.g. by the process of Specification 1,026,504.
