Abstract

1,073,207. Superconductors. MULLARD Ltd. April 28, 1966, No. 18669/66. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H2] To establish a persistent-current loop in a superconductive (cryogenic) circuit (Fig. 1), the coil or set of coils M are energized by an external source connected across terminals 1 while an auxiliary coil A is heated by a heater winding H in close proximity. When a desired current is flowing in the coils M, coil A is allowed to cool until it becomes superconducting then the supply to coils M is disconnected and the persistent current loop is thereby established. A flux pump FP is provided for fine control of the current and the connecting wires G are of niobium-zirconium alloy. The niobium-zirconium wires G are connected together at C by twisting them together, enclosing them in an envelope (P) (Fig. 2, not shown) and crimping the assembly. The envelope (P) may be of copper or silver and may either be in the form of a tube or a strip of foil wrapped around the twisted wires. A normal conductor such as J may be soldered to the outside of the envelope (P), and the assembly may be supported in a stainless-steel clamp (Fig. 4, not shown) attached to the apparatus.
