Abstract

1,073,109. Portable electric drills. SKIL CORPORATION. Feb. 21, 1966 [March 10, 1965], No. 7510/66. Heading B3C. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A universal motor 48 is adapted to be supplied from A.C. source 44, 45, through silicon controlled rectifier 52 having a control unit which comprises conductive strips 14, 16, 18 engageable with a slider. The latter is triggeroperated against the force of a spring, the strip 18 having a comparatively high resistance. As the slider is moved from an " off " position towards the right the strips are interconnected to close the rectifier circuit, the resistance of the strip 18 being reduced to increase the conductive periods of the rectifier whose gating circuit also comprises capacitor 58 associated with neon bulb 60 and resistor 63. The slider finally disengages strip 16 and engages contact 20 so that the rectifier is shunted and the motor is supplied directly from the A.C. source. The control unit may be mounted in the hand-grip portion of a portable tool such as a drill.
