[Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing the hollow jaw 7 of a universal joint, or any similar part, of the kind wherein part-spherical rollers 4 carried on transverse trunnions 3 fast with a shaft 1, are axially slidable in grooves 6 in the jaw 7, in which the track grooves 6 are formed in the thickness of the wall of the jaw 7 and open out on one side only, e.g. the inside surface, providing an unbroken external wall which is free from resonance to reduce wear in service, comprises forming the hollow jaw with the grooves by drawing and/or extrusion at a temperature sufficiently low to ensure control of dimensional tolerances and surface conditions. The jaw 7 may be either of high carbon content steel (0À4 to 0À6%) to permit high or medium-frequency hardening treatment of the grooves 6 or of case-hardening steel in which the grooves 6 are hardened by tempering after case-hardening, and may be formed by a hot or cold extrusion followed by a final drawing operation in the cold or moderate temperature condition or the operation may consist of a final and sole direct extrusion in the cold state. Alternatively the jaw may be cast in spheroidal graphite castiron or malleable perlitic cast-iron and drawn to the final shape. By-these operations the tracks 6 are precision formed with a surface condition having a mean quadratic roughness substantially less than 5 microns. The surface condition of the grooves may be further improved by stoving. The usual gaiter encloses the joint at one end and seats in a groove 9 which represents the only machining operation on the jaw 7.
