A break-point diode function generator is provided with an oscillator 10 which causes the transfer function to oscillate between a first and a second value, to provide a smooth transition between adjacent linear approximations of the transfer function. Each group of resistors 5, 7, 8 determines a particular linear transfer function a, b, c, Fig. 2, approximating to the required transfer relationship, the transition point being S, T. Considering operation near point S, oscillator 10 produces a triangular waveform oscillation having peak amplitude H which is connected via resistor 11A to diode 6A, and an antiphase oscillation of amplitude K connected via resistor 11B to diode 6B. Due to the switching action of the diodes the output waveform produced corresponds to the full line portions h, k having an average value n, so that the working point corresponding to input r is N instead of L, the value LN being a function of LM. Any components of the output at the frequency of oscillator 10 are removed by filter 13. Waveforms other than triangular may be used, and the oscillator 10 may be connected to all diodes in the same phase, or may be connected only to alternate diodes.
