Abstract

802,184. Automatic speed-control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 2, 1956 [May 6, 1955], No. 13494/56. Class 38 (4). In a speed regulating system for a D.C. motor 1 wherein a signal proportional to speed developed in a tachometer generator 9 is compared with the same type of signal from a reference source 16 to produce an error signal, a transistor switch 49 coupling the motor to a direct current source 57 through the emitter to collector conduction path is selectively biased to one extreme ofcollector conduction current (saturation or cut-off) and a pulse generator 26 is arranged to produce pulses which bias the transistor switch to the other extreme in a manner whereby the average collector current is such as to restore the motor speed to the desired speed in accordance with the error signal. Triangular pulses derived from alternating current source 22 by rectifier 23 and linear and non-linear resistors 27 and 25, are applied to the base of transistor 41 and the emitter which is biased from point 18 in the combining circuit 13 determines the peak amplitude. The output across resistor 35 is limited by a Zener diode 37 to supply rectangular pulses the duration of which is proportional to the error signal to the base of transistor 49. A modified arrangement in which the frequency of an A.C. tachometer generator is compared with the frequency of a reference source to produce from a singleshot transistor multivibrator, constant width pulses having a repetition rate proportional to the error signal is described with reference to Fig. 2, (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 775,827.
