Abstract

In the carburizing, chromizing, aluminizing, sheradizing or siliconizing of e.g. a flexible steel strip, the strip is wound into a coil, the space between the coils packed with a powdered material, and the whole heated. A steel strip is wound together with one or more cords, which act as spacer on a bobbin, the top plate of the bobbin is removed, and a metal strip wound round the coil to form an enclosure. The powdered material is poured into the enclosure and compacted, e.g. by vibration. A pot is placed over the assembly and the whole inverted. The other end plate is then removed and further material packed in. The assembly is then heated. In an example a steel strip is chromized using (parts by weight) 9 of calcined bauxite, 1 of anhydrous chromium chloride, 9 of ferrochromium, and heating at 1000 DEG C. for 8 hours. The ferrochromium composition is C 0.04, Cr 71.2, Si 4.10, Fe 24.66.
