Abstract

107,253. Murphy, J. M. June 27, 1916. Projectiles.-Consists in making a projectile in two longitudinal halves 1, 2 connected together by a chain 21 contained within the projectile, the' halves being separated during flight by a bursting charge fired by a time fuse 10. The chain is attached to the base of each half bv a link 23 and nut 27, and lies in two parallel halves embedded in resin or paraffin within the projectile. The two halves of the projectile are interlocked along the longitudinal edges and at 5, and are held together at one end by the driving band 14 and at the other end by a ring underneath a collar 18 on the fuse. The base end is electricallv welded. The base of the projectile is tapered at 29 to reduce air resistance during flight. The projectile is secured in the mouth of a cartridge case by pressing the case into a groove 9 round the projectile.
