Abstract
1,072,535. Feeding webs. MIEHLE-GOSS-DEXTER Inc. Nov. 2, 1965 [Nov. 6, 1964], No. 46420/65. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G3] The peripheral speed of a new roll of web material is matched with the linear velocity of a running web so that the webs may be spliced without being severed. Closure of switch ES1 provides signals to gates AND 2, AND 4, and energizes motor 15 which is adapted to drive the new roll. Gear 12, which is driven by the expiring roll, is associated with pick-up 11 whereby a first pulse derived from monostable circuit FF1 sets bi-stable circuit FF3 to condition gate AND 1 for the passage of a pulse. The next pulse from the circuit FF1 is transmitted through the gate to set the bi-stable circuit FF4, clutch 17 being energized to couple the motor 15 to the new roll which is associated with gear 14, pick-up 13, and monostable circuit FF2. As long as consecutive pulses from the circuit FF1 occur between consecutive pulses from the circuit FF2, indicating that the gear 12 has a greater speed than the gear 14, the motor 15 remains in driving engagement with the new roll which is accelerated. When the speed of the new roll exceeds that of the running web, the circuit FF3 is driven to the reset condition, gate AND 3 is conditioned for the passage of a pulse, and circuit FF4 is reset to energize brake 18, the clutch 17 being de-energized. Thus, the clutch and brake are alternately energized to synchronize the speeds of the new roll and running web.
