Abstract

107,219. Kocher, R. A. May 23, 1916. Glucose is prepared from a cellulose-containing substance, such as sawdust, by subjecting the material to the action of hydrochloric acid gas in a closed container, the water present being insufficient to render fluid any substantial part of the mass throughout the process; the pressure, temperature, and other conditions are such that the gas forms with the water a solution of approximately 40 per cent strength or over. The reaction may be carried on at a temperature of 15-16‹ C. or at a higher temperature, such as 40 or 60‹ C., with a correspondingly increased pressure, the time being shortened at the higher temperature. The excess of hydrochloric acid is withdrawn from the mass when the conversion is completed either by forming a partial vacuum in the vessel or by blowing through a current of air. The glucose may be dissolved out of the mass with water, or, if it is desired to ferment it, the mass may be treated with water and fermented without separating insoluble matters. Hydro-, hydrato-, and oxycellulose may be hydrolysed to glucose by the above described method. Specifications 268/80, [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.], 11407/84, and 11557/84 are referred to.
