Abstract

1,072,101. Feeding webs. HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1963 [Nov. 27, 1962], No. 46870/63. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G2] In an electrophotographic apparatus (see Division G2), a web (23), Fig. 1 (not shown), is unwound from a roll 25, Fig. 3, in an unwind assembly (14), Fig. 1 (not shown). The assembly 14 has pivotally mounted arms (42) which can be raised by fluid actuators (49), Fig. 2 (not shown). A motor 55, Fig. 3, drives a roll 23 through gearing (57), Fig. 4 (not shown), when the arms (42) are in the raised position. Lugs (62) engage holes (63) to effect such driving through a clutch having a clutch plate (70) on a shaft (68) and a drive plate (75) keyed to a shaft (60). The shaft (68) is axially slidable by a handle (87) to disengage the lugs (62) from the holes (63). Core shaft (60) is supported in the arms (42) by bearings (90), (92), and is movable laterally in the raised position by a crank block (102) and crank (105). A paper core (130) is secured to the shaft (60) by an expansible rubber ring (135) and a removable key (127), the ring (135) being expanded by compression through an adjustable member (133). Bearings (90), (92) are held in fixed position by releasable clamping devices (145), Fig. 5 (not shown). A web-tensioning device (160), Fig. 2 (not shown); has a vertically movable floating roller 162, Fig. 3, urged upwardly by air cylinders 166. Should the length of a web loop around roller 162 decrease, a torque tube 170 is rotated clockwise through steel tapes 175 connected to the roller 162. Tube 170 actuates a transducer, e.g. a potentiometer for adjusting the speed of motor 55 to restore tension. A similar tensioning device and roll support is provided for winding-up the printed web. In a modification, Fig. 15 (not shown), for multi-colour reproduction an index mark (337), Fig. 16 (not shown) on a web (335) is sensed by a photomultiplier tube (350) which receives light reflected by the web (335) from a light source (340). A control circuit, Fig. 20 (not shown), controls the flashing of a light source (489) used for exposure of the web in response to the sensed index marks, thereby maintaining correct registration of a succession of images.
