Abstract

An electrolytic process for oxidizing or reducing a dissolved substance to give a dissolved product wherein at least one electrode is subject to a wiping action whilst immersed in the electrolyte, thus providing reduced susceptibility to an inadequate rate of diffusion of a product of the electrolysis away from an electrode surface, and/or of a reactant from the electrolyte to that surface, i.e. when the reaction substance is non-ionic, e.g. the reduction of acrylonitrile to adiponitrile; or when the charge of the reaction substance is the same as that of the electrode at which it reacts, e.g. the electrolysis of a bisulphate to produce dithionate, of a nitrite to produce hyponitrite or of a nitrate to produce hydroxylamine. The wiper is preferably of a deformably material, e.g. soft rubber, nylon bristles or plastic mesh fabric. The cathode material may be bismuth, or a metal or alloy having a low hydrogen overpotential such as titanium nickel, chromium or stainless steel, the surface of which may be poisoned. The electrolyte may contain a water miscible alcohol, an organic base and a surface poisoning agent, e.g. mercuric ions. The electrode may be fixed and its surface wiped by a moving blade, or vice versa. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the cell 20 contains catholyte 36, and anolyte 34 contained within a porous pot 22. The cathode is formed by a bismuth disc 24; and a stirrer 26, suspended vertically through centre of the porous pot 22, is fitted with two soft sponge rubber wiper blades 30 arranged to contact the surface of said bismuth cathode and thereby provide wiping action on rotation of the shaft 26. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the cell (60) is provided with graphite anodes (78), a cathode formed by metal cylinder (80) screwed on to a stainless steel shaft (82), driven by a motor (not shown), and having a "perspex" (Registered Trade Mark) cone (84) cemented to the bottom thereof, a cation exchange membrane (98). Wiper blade supports (108) Fig. 5 (not shown) extend between the diaphragm rings (100) and (102), having attached thereto wiper blades (110) made of latex rubber. In operation the wipers are stationary and wipe the cathode as it rotates.
