1,071,917. Shaping thermoplastic fibrous materials. FORSCHUNGSINSTITUT FœR TEXTILTECHNOLOGIE. Nov. 12, 1964, No. 46148/64. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions D1 and H1] A web of thermoplastic fibrous materials which comprises longitudinal tubular cavities is shaped and stiffened by passing the web through a heating chamber 3 and a cooling chamber 4 with stationary rods 2 being disposed within the tubular cavities. The web may be a double cloth or made by sewing, sticking or welding together two independent webs, and in a preferred form, the web or webs have polyester fibres as a main constituent with up to 30% by weight of P.V.C. fibres, used as weft only. The shaped and stiffened material may be used as plates or pockets in lead-acid batteries, in filters or in protective clothing. The rods 2 are held at a necked portion thereof by clamping rollers 5, 6 which are rotated at a speed the same as, or slightly greater than, the draw-off speed of web 1. Rollers 7-10 counter any tendency of rollers 5, 6 to bend or warp. Heating in chamber 3 may be effected by hot air blowers, by conduction, by radiant heat, e.g. using infrared heaters, by steam or by sprinkling hot water on the web. Rollers 12-15 co-operate in pairs, see also Fig. 2 (not reproduced), to shape the web and provide side flanges (1c), Fig. 4 (not shown), and intermediate connecting portions (1b). These side flanges and connecting portions are engaged by needles 20b, Fig. 1, which are pressed into the material by rotating brushes 25 to draw-off the web. The web is removed from the needles by a cross-bar 26 and the side flanges are trimmed or removed by trimming knives 27. A transverse cutter 30 is also provided.
