Abstract

Melts of inorganic or organic materials, e.g. metals, slags or raw phosphates, are tapped and granulated by passing through a tap hole 4 provided at its narrowest part with an annular nozzle 5 through which fluid e.g. water, is introduced at high speed in the direction of arrows 6 producing a suction effect in the tap hole. After passing through a diffuser tube 8 and granulating space 9, water and granulate collect in vessel 10, water escaping at 13 and granulate being removed by scraper conveyer 12. Steam or other gases escape at 14 and the tap hole is water cooled. The annular nozzle area may be varied by a lower nozzle ring displaceable by a spring. Fig. 3 (not shown), or by fluid pressure, Fig. 4 (not shown). A further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), uses a gaseous granulating stream and has the tap hole disposed horizontally, the granulate falling on to an inclined grate through which cooling gases <PICT:1071613/C6-C7/1> pass to be used later as combustion or gasifying agents in the furnace. In a final modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the granulating stream is gaseous and tangential apertures below it disperse liquid on to the diffuser walls preventing adherance of granulate.
