Heading B6B. Apparatus for separating and feeding documents or other sheet-like articles from a stack, comprises a first pair of rollers F, G arranged to receive between them documents separated from the stack A, a second pair of rollers T, U, a guide wall N which guides the documents from the first pair of rollers to the second pair, an inclined flap or stop O to stop the feed of a document and which is pivoted at R and engageable with the guide wall N at a distance from the bight of the rollers F, G which is less than the length of a document, and known photo-electric means located downstream of the stop O to detect the passage of a document and to cause the stop to move away from the wall N to permit passage of a single document to the second pair of rollers T, U. The documents A are stacked on edge on a carriage B having rollers C, and the stack is urged by known means against a driven friction roller D which separates the documents. The stack is also agitated by a rotating flyer E provided with blades. The roller F is driven about a fixed axis, and the roller G is an idler roller, braked against rotation by a friction coupling, and mounted in a frame K which is pivoted at L and urged by a spring H towards the roller F. The mating surfaces of the rollers F, G can be concave and convex, respectively, and the roller G prevents more than one document being separated. When a single document passes between the rollers, the roller G will be forced to rotate until the document strikes the stop O, then the roller will stop and the drive roller F will slip over the document. The mating faces of the stop O and the guide wall N have friction linings P, Q, respectively. Sheet guides.-The documents are guided between the two sets of rollers F, G and T, U by the longitudinally-extending wall N, assisted by a plate M arranged between the rollers F, G and the stop O. Adjacent the rollers F, G the wall N is bent so that the documents hit the stop O, and will promote separation in the event of double-feed.
